 "Chop-chop" suspect yields

A native of Tagbilaran who confessed to the "chop-chop" killing of a fellow OFW said she trusts her life to City Mayor Dan Lim.

The suspect, Grace Abuyabor, 34, finally confessed to the crime to her brother-in-law, SPO3 David Niluag, Tagbilaran PNP criminal investigator Friday midnight when confronted about it.

SUSPECT Grace Abuyabor, 34, surrenders to city PNP.

Abuyabor had been linked to the gruesome murder of one Rosita Sarin, a native of Malaybalay, Bukidnon after her ticket was recovered in one of two traveling bags where the victims's mutilated remains were recovered.

Grace had confronted Sarin about the allegations she made to her husband, a Lebanese now based in Europe, that she had an affair with another man while working in Taiwan.

She strongly denied the story of her alleged liaison which caused her husband to break up with her last March.

The two had become close friends after Grace learned that Sarin's father had Boholano roots.
Due to Sarin's desire to apply for work in Canada, Grace gave her the number of her husband's cellular phone.

Grace however insisted that she had already accepted her husband's decision to separate from her and simply asked Sarin why she told him she was having an affair in Taiwan.

Instead of apologizing, Grace said Sarin suddenly turned hysterical, prompting her to slap her to silence her because she was ashamed that the neighbors will hear.

She said Sarin slapped her back and led them to grapple with each other.

Since Grace was bigger than Sarin, she said the latter got a knife and was about to stab her when she was able to grip it.

Showing the cuts on her fingers, Grace said that she overpowered Sarin until she accidentally stabbed her in the chest.

Sarin ran to the bathroom but Grace said she no longer knew what she was doing and repeatedly stabbed Sarin until her body had been cut several times.

The suspect said she did not know what to do upon realizing that she had killed Sarin in a sudden fit of rage inside her rented apartment room in Project 8, Quezon City Wednesday morning.

Grace took the Manila-Dumaguete flight the next day after the incident since it was the first flight out of Manila.

She went to the house of her father's sister in Bais where she had her hand treated before taking a fast craft to Tagbilaran Friday afternoon.

Ashamed of herself for what she did and saddened by the shame it will bring to her family, Grace said she intended to commit suicide Friday evening before her brother-in-law talked her out of it.

He was able to convince her to surrender at the Tagbilaran PNP station about 11:30 Friday midnight.

Yesterday morning, Grace was presented to Lim who assured her he will support her in what he considered an act of desperation by one who has sacrificed so much.

"I am proud of her for her decision to face the consequences of her action," Lim added.

Grace said that when he learned of her plan to commit suicide, the mayor made her promise not to do it.

"My help is useless if you will not give your life a chance," Lim told Grace.

The mayor said Grace is as much a victim as the dead woman because she had sacrificed so much to send her younger sister and brother to school.

Before working in Taiwan, Grace took care of two children in Singapore where she met her husband.

Grace had promised her father that she will make sure her youngest brother would graduate before settling down with her husband.

The mayor said Grace is an unselfish sister who placed her younger sibling's interest over her own.

"When it was time for her to enjoy her life, her husband left her because of the lies told to him by the victim," Lim added.

Although Grace had calmly accepted her fate, her outrage was aroused when the victim allegedly tried to stab her with the knife.

Grace, prior her work abroad was a public school teacher in Loon, with a short stint as grade school teacher in one of the Catholic schools in the city. She survived her way in school by becoming a scholar when she enrolled at Divine Word College where she completed her education studies.

At the Tagbilaran airport before taking the flight to Manila yesterday, Grace thanked Lim for his support in the most difficult crisis of her life.

Lim took the same flight to escort Grace when she surrenders to the authorities in Quezon City.
